Determine Phone Type to Combat Inmate Fraud, Criminal Activity - Phone IQ

April 7, 2015

Global Tel*Link (GTL) released Phone IQ, a new intelligence application available for its inmate telephone platforms that combats fraud and other criminal activity by detecting a called party’s phone line type.

Phone IQ detects whether calls from a correctional facility are being placed to a traditional landline, a cellular phone, a disposable burner cell phone, or voice over internet protocol (VoIP) line. The GTL inmate telephone system user interface provides a visual indicator to alert users as to what is the called party’s phone type. Users are able to filter call detail reporting by the phone type detected and view the phone type indicator when monitoring calls in progress.

Determining what type of phone an inmate is calling can be invaluable information to an investigator searching for fraudulent or other criminal activity, especially in facilities that limit the types of phones that inmates are allowed to call. Investigators can quickly spot frequent changes of phone numbers, specifically prepaid burner phones, called by watched inmates or groups of inmates. Isolating calls to burner phones can aide in researching calls with valuable content. It also increases the facility’s control in deciding if specific calls should be flagged and an alert sent.

Phone IQ is one of many tools in the IQ family of intelligence products. Together, these products form the most holistic approach to intelligence gathering in the correctional industry, offering investigators a broad range of options for gathering pertinent, actionable intelligence.
